A MESSAGE FROM LAURIE
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Thirty years ago I fell in love with Thomaston. My husband Bruce (current Selectman, Thomaston) and I chose to raise our family here. When our children attended Black Rock School I became a volunteer, holding bottle drives to raise money and organized parents to paint the gym, kitchen, nurses office and some of the hallways when there was no money in the budget for these improvements. I remained involved right through Project Graduation and currently as a member of the Board of Education.
As an 11 year member of the Thomaston Board of Education, I find providing for the education of our children challenging in these difficult economic times. As board chair, I work closely with the Superintendent of Schools and School Finance Director to provide a solid education for the children of Thomaston. Each year our outstanding students go on to colleges where they continue to challenge and enrich their lives. Our teachers and staff, faced with limited funding provide for each of the children in our district, challenging them to do their best.
As a registered nurse, my career has always focused on caring for people. St. Thomas Church has supported a Parish Nurse program where I have been a volunteer since its inception many years ago. In April 2010 I was able to travel to Haiti as a member of a medical mission, Help Haitians Heal Haitians. It amazed me to see the resilience and hope of the Haitian people who had nothing. I returned from Haiti with a conviction to become more involved at home (click here to read more about Laurie’s trip to Haiti).
Here in our corner of
Together we can make a difference!
Sincerely,
Laurie Barrett
