Letters from the October 23, 2009 Edition of the Thomaston Express and October 21, 2009 Edition of The Register Citizen:
Endorsing Mike Madow

Mike Madow is a very dedicated Thomastonian. He has spent countless hours serving on local boards.

The Thomaston Economic Development Commission and the Thomaston Rotary Club just to name two.

He coaches Thomaston Little League baseball and is also one of its sponsors.

Mike is a local business owner and a home owner. He understands how taxes are hitting both businesses and home owners hard. Indeed, making each side happy will be a very difficult task.

Lucky for all of us, Mike Madow is totally prepared to deal with this task.

Mike is highly intelligent. He carries a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a minor in communications.

When he puts his mind to it, there is nothing he can’t tackle. He is ready to tackle the very tough decisions that our town needs.

Mike Madow will be an excellent Thomaston Board of Finance member.

Letters from the October 23, 2009 Edition of the Thomaston Express:
Endorses Jackson

My name is Rae Ann Walcott. I am voting for the Democratic Ticket on November 3rd.

I am the sister of the Candidate for First Selectman, Elizabeth Jackson. I have known Beth all of my life and can tell you that she is an honest, hard working, and fair person. She was born and raised in Thomaston. She completed her education here, raised her family here and has served on multiple boards. She was involved with the PTA and Project Graduation when her children were in school. She serves on the light up committee recently as the chairman, and the Clocktower Restoration committee. She owns a business in town with her husband Paul. She is employed by an Attorney Group. I am sure that you are saying to yourself, of course I would endorse my sister, but I truly feel that Beth will do a great job for the town and the towns residents and no one knows her better than me. Our parents taught us three things to live by, they were first, work hard: second, do the job right the first time, then you won’t have to do it again: and probably most important third: all you have is your word, so if you give your word, keep it. Integrity is everything, be true to yourself. I know that Beth has followed this advice throughout her life, for this reason, she will do the best job she possibly can.

Bruce Barrett needs no introduction, he is well known by most of the town. He can stand on his reputation as a business man. Eager to help, he is an asset to the ticket. So please join me this November 3rd, and support the Democratic ticket. Get out and vote. Thank you.

Rae Ann Walcott
Supports Ostrander

I am asking that voters support the re-election of Rita Ostrander to the Thomaston Public library Board of Directors.

Rita was named to fill a vacancy on the library board two years ago. During those two years she had demonstrated commitment, leadership and enthusiasm. She understands the value of the library in our community and works hard in its behalf.

Rita, a student activities programming assistant at Naugatuck Valley Community College has a number of volunteer activities to her credit. Among those efforts are service as a Waterbury Teen Parents Advocate and volunteering on behalf of Special Olympics.

She is an outstanding candidate, who is worthy of your consideration.

Mary Ann Martin
Endorses Jackson

I think all us of know we are in very difficult times with the issues facing us in the future. I have been resident of Thomaston all my life and have had the pleasure of getting to know many people in my time.

Because of their integrity, I am endorsing Beth Jackson and Bruce Barrett for the First Selectman and the Board of selectman. I know that they both will do what is best for Thomaston.

Don Fredlund
Vote for Mike Madow

I am endorsing Mike Madow for Board of Finance, running on the Democratic ticket. Mike is the president/owner of Ramco Recovery, a member of The Thomaston Rotary, a supporter and assistant coach for Thomaston Little League, involved in various activities within the school system and has held positions on the board of directors at the synagogue.

Mike and his family have become great friends of ours. When we moved to town 11 years ago, Mike was the first neighbor to introduce himself and welcome us to Thomaston. Over the years, Mike has demonstrated sensible decision making from facts and research, conscience fiscal responsibilities and has the ability to listen to what the issues and needs are before coming to a conclusion.

I believe Mike knows how to be a leader and team player in making decisions on what is best for the Town of Thomaston and its taxpayers.

Supports Madow

I’m writing in support of Michael Madow for the 6-year term to the Board of Finance in Thomaston. As the election approaches, Thomaston faces an important decision as to the financial governance of the town. As a resident and taxpayer, I support a candidate who can produce town budgets that maintain services while minimizing the tax burden.

Moreover, budgets must be acceptable to the majority of residents, a difficult task even in a booming economy. Producing budgets where multiple stakeholders are represented requires a candidate to be balanced with a firm foundation of training and experience. Thomaston needs a candidate with these attributes to ensure that experience guides decisions to a prompt and appropriate conclusion. On the job training isn’t an option.

If you believe in this as I do, then the choice for the Board of Finance is clear. Mike Madow has the real-world experience managing the finances of national and international companies making him an asset to any organization. His desire to use these talents to support Thomaston is commendable, but for those of us who know him the sight of Mike offering to help when it’s needed is not a surprise. Mike has a strong commitment to the town and can be counted on to support the interest of all residents.

As citizens, we are provided a voice in government though our vote. Our interest is to ensure when our vote is cast, it’s for the best candidate. Mike Madow is that candidate.

Letters from the October 30, 2009 Edition of the Thomaston Express:
Supports Barrett

I am writing this letter in support for my brother, Bruce Barrett, who is running for the Board of selectmen. The Democrats asked him to run for this office based on his many qualifications, including being a business owner, volunteer and well known citizen of Thomaston for many years. Beyond these qualifications, I am asking you to consider the importance of character when casting your vote on Tuesday, Nov. 3. There is a twelve year age difference between us. By the time I was in kindergarten, Bruce was on his way to adulthood. I have the good fortune of being able to watch how he’s handled adulthood and the choices he’s made. He has been married to Laurie for thirty years and they have taught me loyalty, perseverance and faith. Their five children have been a source of joy and pride to me. Now that the children have grown to college-age and beyond, you would think that Bruce and Laurie would want to breathe a sigh of relief and take some time to relax. Instead, they both dive head first into volunteerism and serving the town they love, I would like to thank them both for their service.

Bruce worked hard for many years in the oil business, perfected his craft, then had the guts to try and make it on his own. He has been successful at this endeavor due to his strong work ethic, the support of his wife and his strong moral character. These are the same qualities that will make Bruce a success working for the people of Thomaston. He is a people person. He is a good listener and certainly a fine speaker. He wants to be a voice for the people of town and his compassionate nature and ability to have contact with hundreds of residents every week make him the perfect candidate.

Bruce is an enthusiastic person who will work as hard for the people of Thomaston as he to vote for Bruce Barrett in Election Day.

Debra Barrett Daigle
Endorses Yaffe

It is my pleasure to recommend my friend Beth Yaffe for re-election to the Thomaston Board of Education. Beth has been a dedicated Board member for the past 12 years, serving as Secretary and Vice Chairmen during her tenure. She has also served on the Athletics, Policy, Transportation and Budget sub-committees. Beth was involved in interviewing and hiring two Superintendents. In addition to her experience on the board, Beth has attended many Connecticut Board of Education conferences and training sessions over the past twelve years. Serving as a member of the board of education requires commitment, and sacrifice. Beth is committed to children and improving public relations and communication between the Board of Education, teachers, parents and the community.

I have known Beth for a long time, and she is a person of outstanding character and integrity. We need a person with Beth’s experience and passion for public education on the board during these difficult times. I know that Beth will continue to put the kids first. Vote for Beth Yaffe on November 3.

Bill Dayton
Endorses Barrett

Bruce Barrett is worthy of your vote for selectman. Through the years, as our children grew up as friends, I have seen him participate in town activities as a dad, school sports fan, scout parent, church and civic volunteer and business man. He has proven to be an honest, hard-working, down-to-earth individual who gives 100% of his attention to the task at hand, whether it’s serious business or light-hearted fun. He has served Thomaston well in the past and will bring a refreshing openness to the board. He will truly do his best for the town he loves.
